How to Measure a Motorcycle Bolt

Diameter, pitch, length and head style all need to match.

A few careful measurements can prevent most ordering mistakes. Use the original fastener as your reference and confirm critical applications against the motorcycle manufacturer’s documentation.

DiameterMeasure across the outside of the threads.
Thread PitchConfirm the spacing between thread crests.
LengthMeasure from the correct seating surface.
Head StyleMatch the drive, seat and available clearance.
01
START WITH THE ORIGINAL

Clean and Inspect the Fastener

Remove dirt from the threads and seating surface before measuring. Check that the bolt is not stretched, bent, heavily corroded or damaged; a distorted fastener is a poor reference.

Record where the bolt came from and how many identical fasteners the assembly uses. Similar-looking bolts on the same motorcycle can have different lengths, pitches or shoulder dimensions.

02
NOMINAL SIZE

Measure the Thread Diameter

Use a vernier or digital caliper to measure across the outermost thread crests. Metric bolts are named by their nominal thread diameter: a measurement close to 6 mm normally indicates M6, close to 8 mm indicates M8, and so on.

Do not identify the size from the wrench or hex-key opening. Drive size and thread diameter are separate dimensions.

03
THREAD MATCH

Confirm the Thread Pitch

Metric thread pitch is the distance from one thread crest to the next, measured in millimetres. A thread-pitch gauge is the clearest tool. If one is not available, compare the original fastener with a known bolt of the same diameter and verify that the threads align without forcing them together.

A bolt marked M6 × 1.0 has a nominal 6 mm diameter and a 1.0 mm pitch. Diameter alone is not enough—different pitches can exist within the same nominal size.

04
SEATING SURFACE

Measure the Correct Length

For most socket-cap, hex-head and flange bolts, measure from the underside of the head to the end of the threaded shank. Do not include the head height.

Countersunk or flat-head bolts are the common exception because the head sits inside the material; their stated length is normally measured from the top of the head to the tip. If the original has an unthreaded shoulder, also record the shoulder length and diameter.

05
FINAL FITMENT CHECK

Match the Head, Seat and Threaded Portion

Confirm the head style, drive type, flange or washer arrangement, and clearance around the head. Compare the amount of threaded and unthreaded shank with the original fastener; two bolts can share the same overall length while engaging the assembly differently.

A useful specification format is M6 × 1.0 × 30 mm, socket-cap head. Add the quantity and finish only after the functional dimensions are confirmed.
